Universal son is a graphic novel combining narrative with songs. The songs were all written by myself and, I hope, add an extra dimension to the narrative that can’t be conveyed with words or pictures. It is the story of Jack, the son of a wealthy music industry entrepreneur, and is thus at least partly a story about the music industry itself, being set at the time EMI was sold to venture capitalists. It is entirely fictional, though partly motivated by my own and friends experiences of ‘making it’ (or indeed not ‘making it’) in the music industry. Mostly it was inspired by a fascination with the strangeness of an industry that backed innovative artists like David Bowie and Kate Bush, and that was once one of the UKs greatest exports.
